Irrigation spring start-up

How to start up an irrigation system correctly after winter, from reactivating the supply to flushing lines and reprogramming the controller.

Irrigation spring start-up is the process of reactivating the system after winter winterisation. It begins by slowly opening the water supply to avoid pressure shock, which can damage valves and fittings. Lines are flushed to clear any sediment that has settled over winter, and each zone is run in turn to check that valves, sprinklers and emitters are working correctly. Filters are cleaned, sprinkler nozzles are inspected and replaced where worn, and the controller is reprogrammed with a spring schedule and seasonal adjustment enabled. Any faults found are reported and repaired before the garden needs watering in earnest. We recommend spring start-up in March or early April, once the risk of hard frost has passed. A properly started system is ready for the season with no surprises.
